Birthday Poems: Happy Birthday To Everyone

Birthdays are a time for great celebration. When we are younger we set important time frames on different years of age. All children go through the terrible two’s, that age when they just seem to get into everything as they satisfy the urge of curiosity. Then there is the age of 5 when children embark on the journey of educational success. For some children the age of 10 becomes important because they have reached age in double figures. Then there is the age of 13 that special birthday when you become a teenager. Soon after that is that magical age of sweet 16. Before you know it you have reached the legal age of 18. Now you are an adult.
Once you have reached the age of 18 you are off to college or the start of your chosen career. Then your 21st birthday arrives. This seems to be one of those most special birthdays. This is the last of those young milestones that we are so anxious to reach. From there the new birthday milestones begin to take us to another level. The next birthday on the list seems to be the age of 30. When you are 16 the age of 30 seems like it is over the hill. Once you reach the age of 30 the landmark birthdays begin to arrive in decades like 40, then 50 and then 60 and so on. The age of 40 seems to be one of the most emotional birthdays. For many it is the age where you have reached the top and are heading down the other side of the mountain.
There is no doubt that the older you become the more you value your birthdays. You may not celebrate it with a cake and ice cream but you are glad to see another. It is a fact that when we are younger we are in a rush to reach certain age milestones and that when we reach a certain age our wisdom seems to change and we want it all to slow down. Once we reach the age of 40 we begin to evaluate our position in life. What have we done? Have we left our mark on the world? The age of reflection begins. We begin to examine our lives through a microscope.
There are so many special birthdays in our lives. We celebrate our own and then we celebrate those of our family and friends. Birthdays should be important to us. It is the one day of the year that belongs to us individually. It is our day. The emotions of this day are often shared in the form of poetry. Birthday Poems: Her Last Birthday
By Will Curl

My Mother passed away almost 2 years ago. There has not been a day gone by that I have not thought about her. I miss her with all my heart. She was the moral guide in our family. She was the symbol of all that was good and true. She was not perfect. She made mistakes like anyone else. But she worked hard at trying to be the best Mother, the best wife, and the best friend that she could be. Like any Mother she only wanted the best for her children. She spent a lifetime putting her children before herself. There were many times that she gave up the things she desired for us. She was the teacher of what she believed was right. She was guided by her faith and her love for family.
When I think of my Mother now, my memory seems to drift back to her last birthday. She celebrated her 75th birthday just 6 months prior to her passing. I will remember it always. It took us 75 years to throw her a surprise birthday party. We had reserved a large area that was big enough to fit all of our family into. Her only surviving sister was able to attend even though she was even older than my Mother and lived almost a thousand miles away. More than 50 family members gathered for this monumental event. When we wheeled my Mother into the room I will never forget the look on her face. Of course she began to cry and most of us did as well.
Everyone in the family loved my Mother. She was always ready to lend a kind word and a helping hand. I know that on her last birthday she felt that love like never before. I have no doubt that her last birthday party remained near and dear to her for the remaining 6 months of her life. On that day, she definitely felt like it was her day. As I looked at her that day across the large dinner table I could not help feel the pain and agony that she was experiencing on what I am convinced she knew would be her last birthday celebration. But she would never admit it. She evoked an atmosphere of faith and acceptance that made us all proud to have known her.
My Mother did not complain of what ailed her. She believed that she had lived a long, rewarding life with the family that she had raised with love and compassion. There was not a day that I visited her that I did not witness the same inspiring smile that I had grown attached to all the years of my life. In the end she inspired us all with her faith and commitment to what she believed. I was with my Mother when she passed away. I was kneeling at her bedside as her final breath escaped her body. She was peaceful and finally at rest. At that moment in my life emptiness engulfed me that may never ever be filled. My ability to carry on is fortified by her memory and the knowledge that she would not want me to give up. That was not my Mothers way. She had the faith.

Birthday Poems: My 5th Birthday
By Will Curl

I do not know how I am able to remember the events surrounding my 5th birthday. Never the less, I do. I remember it for particular reasons that I will explain. It was January 1966. It was cold and the snow covered the Ohio countryside like a white wool blanket. My family lived in a big house that lay at the end of a long dirt lane. The Ohio winters could be harsh and this one was no exception. I remember being so excited about my upcoming birthday. My Mother had told me that my Uncle Bob was coming to visit. This filled me with anticipation. My Uncle Bob was something special. He was my Mothers eldest brother and he had a reputation of being a loner. He was his own man.
My Uncle Bob had lived a very interesting life. He was the oldest of ten children. Early in his adulthood he had been convicted of rape and sentenced to prison. He served 11 years before it was realized that they had the wrong man. He lost 11 years of his life for a crime he did not commit. Perhaps this event in his life made him a loner. However, it never affected his spirit. He spent years working for a major circus and traveling all around the United States. He would always come home in the winter and leave again in the spring. He did not own a car. He took public transportation or he walked. Every winter I could look down that long lane and see him walking and singing his way to our home.
This particular January my Uncle Bob seemed extremely joyful. He spoke of my upcoming birthday and the surprise he had gotten me. The night before my birthday he dropped by and told us that he was going to stay the night with his brother Ralph. He assured me that he would be there the next day for my birthday. The next morning could not come to soon. It was not Christmas but it was awful close. It was not everyday that a boy turned 5. I was moving up in the world. It was my birthday and I was ready for it. I jumped from my bed and ran down the stairs in search of my Mother. I was prepared for my birthday breakfast. Mother was not there to greet me. My much older brother informed me that she would be back soon. Soon seemed like forever.
When my Mother came home she immediately pulled me off to the side. She held me on her lap and gave me the news that would forever highlight this birthday for the rest of my life. My Mother had to break the news to me that my Uncle Bob had died in his sleep. I was shocked. How could this be? I had just seen him the night before. The realization of death and the meaning of birthdays were forever changed in my young mind. My Uncle Bob had passed away on my 5th birthday. It cemented the memory of him in my heart and mind and it will never fade away.

Birthday Poems: My 22nd Birthday Present
By Will Curl

As you begin to get along in years you cannot help but reflect back upon the various events in your life. You begin to reinvest memory into every holiday, every birthday, and every special moment that you can pull out of the cobweb filled storage of your mind. You begin to break those moments down and analyze what made them so special and unique. I have been fortunate enough to celebrate very many birthdays over the years. It can be said that there is something unique about each one. They occurred in different places and in different situations in my life. As I look back now I know that one will always be dear to my heart. The birthday present that I received on my 22nd birthday stood out as the best gift anyone could ever hope for.
On my birthday, in January 1983, my first child, my little girl Mary was born. The doctor told me that my birthday would never be the same again. He was right. There could never be a present that could compare to that which I had just received. We tend to look for many material things on our birthday but as time goes by you realize that it is the gifts of the heart that bring us the most pleasure. As I watched Mary come into the world on that birthday so many years ago I knew that my life would never be the same. This beautiful little bundle of joy was a living, breathing testament of the love that her Mother and I still cherish till this very day. I immediately saw in her all of the things I hoped she could be.
On the day of my little girls birth, my 22nd birthday, my imagination was filled with special moments to come. I was embraced with the knowledge that I was now a Daddy. I knew that being a Daddy was more than just a title. I accepted that with that title comes responsibility. Typically, our birthdays are filled with gifts that we use for a while and then they wind up on a shelf or in a closet. My 22nd birthday gift would not fall into this category. My birthday gift would require constant attention and life long maintenance with never ending love and support. This birthday gift was truly the gift that keeps on giving everyday of the year.
Mary has grown now, and has a life of her own. As I reflect back to that 22nd birthday, so many years ago, I cannot help but see it as one of the most memorable days of my life. Since that birthday Mary and I have celebrated our birthday together for a quarter of a century. As each birthday comes and goes I have the joy of sharing that 22nd birthday present over and over again. The days have gone forever when I could bounce her on my knee; a long ago time when she still depended upon Daddy for everything. But I am so blessed to have had the opportunity to watch my 22nd birthday gift grow into a woman a Daddy will always be proud of. Now that’s a birthday present for the ages

40th Birthday Poems: Turning 40, A Glass Half Empty Or Half Full
By Will Curl
Copyrights © 2008 - 2010 PoemVidz.com
I will never forget walking into a class room one day, many years ago, and seeing a quote on the chalk board that read, Life is what you make it. That always stuck with me. I truly believe that attitude is the center of our existence. We can choose to be happy or unhappy. Of course there are occasions that will make us upset, but our attitude is what will eventually see us through those difficult moments in time. Turning 40 is a prime example of this. There seems to be considerable hype about reaching the age of 40. Opinions are vast and plentiful. It would seem that most see this age as a major milestone of sorts. Some see it as the door to middle age, the exit from their youth. Still others do not adhere to the hype at all, for them 40 is the new 30. So, as you can clearly see, opinions are divided. Some see the glass half empty, while others see it half full.
Once again, attitude controls the opinion. If, in your heart, you believe that 40 makes you too old, than it is justifiable to conclude that your body will in turn, feel very old. However, if your attitude is more optimistic, and you believe that you are in the prime of your life, your body will respond to that as well. The circle of life cannot be ignored. We all will age, we will all meet the same end to our existence. However, it is our approach in relation to our life, that will set us apart from the world around us. Our attitude will reflect positively or negatively on those who breath our same air. If your attitude is positive, you can justifiably influence others to be positive as well. We cannot waste valuable time, reflecting on what we did or did not do. The past is the past, we have to learn from it, and then go on. As long as you have a breath, you have the opportunity to be a positive influence on others around you.
Regardless of your attitude, turning 40 is cause for many to ponder. It is simply human to reflect. We do it at every birthday, and often at Christmas. Memories will always be there, and they should be. But reflection does not have to be negative. Take from it the positives and strive to strengthen that emotion. There are so many perspectives on turning 40. Many individuals have poured out these thoughts in the form of poetry. You have the opportunity to share some of those poems with us. Take the journey, perhaps you will encounter some of your own feelings, or be confronted with a perspective you had not imagined. Discover for yourself, whether your glass is half full or half empty.
