The Essence Of A Name

No one has the opportunity to choose his or her own name at birth. You have the right to change it when you reach legal age, but you have to live with the one your parents gave you until then. Our names are very important to us. Therefore, naming your child places a great deal of responsibility on us as parents. For the most part our children will carry that name for the rest of their lives. Names have a way of defining us throughout our journey through life. You wouldn’t want to give your male child a female name or visa versa. Some names have come to define strength over the years while others have not. Who would have thought that names could mean so much?
You can buy books upon books that will assist you in choosing the right name for your child. These books will list the most popular names over the years for males and females as well as the names that have been less popular. The value of a name cannot be underestimated. Many parents choose names that are very unusual and different. Others go with very sound and traditional names. It seems like parents are spending more and more time each year trying to come up with a name that will enhance their child’s identity. The process of coming up with a name for your child has become a journey of searching and examination. Names are that important.
For the most part we are content with our names and it is actually our personality that defines us as much as our name. However, some names so seem to stand out in our mind. For example most people around the world know the name Elvis. Elvis Presley was a famous rock and roll singer and actor. However it was not the name Elvis that made him famous, it was the fact that he was a great entertainer. On the other hand the famous American actor John Wayne has a famous name. That however was his stage name. His real name was Marion Michael Morrison. Would that name have suited a tough cowboy image? It can be argued that a name does serve a valid purpose in our lives.
There are so many cute names out there. Some parents name their child after a flower or a month of the year. Many times we choose our names by naming our children after someone that we admire and look up to. No matter how you look at it we put a great deal of thought and emotion into a name. Many people like to express their feelings and emotions about names in poetry. At poemvidz.com they have put forth an enhanced effort to accumulate poetry about names that you can share with those that you love. They invite you to enjoy the amazing feeling poetry can deliver. There really is something in a name.

Carrying On The Name

My name is William. I was named after my Grandfather on my Fathers side of the family. Sometimes when you are young you fail to pay much heed to a name. I knew that I was named after him but never really attributed much to it. As you get older however you begin to examine things much more closely. By the time I had entered adulthood I was beginning to feel quite honored to be carrying on my Grandfathers name. I began to realize just how important my Grandfather was to me. I began to reflect on the man and the name. Our name had bonded us together for eternity.
My Grandfather passed away many years ago. When I reflect back about him it seems I most remember his voice. It was a booming voice that was like none I have heard before or since. He had one of those voices that you never forget. I did not get to see him as much as I would have liked when we were growing up. He lived in another state and we did not make that journey often. What that did though is make me enjoy the visits I had with him even more special. I remember that he smoked a pipe. The tobacco had an aroma that I will also never forget. I don’t smoke but I always said that if I did it would have been that pipe.
The one thing that I have realized over the years is that a name is important. I find myself hoping that I am doing a good service to the name I was given. My Grandfather never really said much about our name. We would joke when I would call him and he would answer the phone and say this is Bill and I would say well this is Bill too. It wasn’t until one of my sons was born that he made a comment to me that made me understand that he cared one way or the other. I had made a choice not to name my first or second son after me. I did not want them to go through life being called junior or little Bill. I wanted them to have their own identity.
When my wife was pregnant with our last son I began to wonder if I had made the right choice. I began to have an uneasy feeling about our name not being carried on. I called my Grandfather and he asked if I was going to name him after us or not. In the end I chose to only give my youngest son our name as a middle name. I felt that it would not be right to name my youngest son after me after bypassing the first two. Now, I rely on my sons to name one of their sons after me.

The Name Game
By Will Curl

The process of coming up with a name for your child can be nerve wrecking to say the least. For some there is never any doubt because they have long ago decided that they would name a child after someone special in their lives. Yet others go out on a limb and try to come up with a name that is unique and will give their children a certain edge in the name game. In the name game of life the name you have been given can enhance your identity. The well from which to draw possible names is bottomless. Here is the thing. The name that you provide for them will follow them for all the days of their life.
Our names are important but they will not alone bring us success or failure. We could name our son Elvis but it does not mean he will be the next king of rock and roll. Of course it may draw him some extra attention though. And if we gave him that name would he be forever under the pressure to live up to that name. On the other hand if we were to name our son Adolph, could he not always be associated with Adolph Hitler the infamous Dictator of Germany during the Second World War. Would he not carry a name that is considered inflammatory to most ears? Names are important.
And what about names that are given woman? If you were to name your child Madonna would her name not bring up thoughts of the rock and roll singer? Would the name Lizzie not bring back memories of the infamous axe murders; thought to be committed by Lizzie Borden in New England at the turn of the last century? Would these names be hard to live up to or live down? Without doubt names are very important. Our children do not have a choice in a process that will be attached to them forever. It is for this reason we must take the responsibility seriously and make our choices wisely.
The name game is competitive. There have been numerous books and articles written that provide the history behind a name. They list the names that have defined strength and those that have presented weakness. They list the names that have been most popular and those that have been commonly avoided. There is more to a name than meets the eye. Since the beginning of time names have been celebrated in poetry. There has been Poetry written about the famous and infamous as well. Consider your name. How do you like it? Would you rather have another name? Did your name have any effect in relationship to your journey through life? Names are vital to our confidence as human beings. However, in the end, it is us as human beings that give the names their meaning.

The Boy Named Sue
By Will Curl

Country Music recording artist Johnny Cash brought out a song many decades ago about a Boy Named Sue. This song really amplified the importance of a name and what repercussions could follow an unusual name. Johnny Cash is gone now but his powerful lyric’s about a boy that was given a girls name has stood the test of time. It is one thing to pick a name for your child that is simply unusual but to give the child a name that is meant for the opposite sex? You would have to walk in a boy named Sue’s shoes to realize the value in a name.
In the Johnny Cash song a father names his son Sue and then leaves the boy and his mother with nothing but an old guitar and an empty bottle of booze. The boy feels that the meanest thing his father could have done was to give him that terrible name. The boy proceeds through life being taunted and challenged. He is drawn to frequent fights as he attempts to live down his name. Where ever he goes his name follows him. He is in one fight after another. It appears to him that his life is destined for sadness and despair because his father gave him that rotten name.
As the story goes many years later when the boy has become an adult he comes face to face with the mangy dog that named him Sue in a bar and the fight of all fights is on. The boy realizes that he has fought many a men but that his father was as tough as they come. In the end as they lay there wore out and out of breath from the fight his father defends his reasoning. His father tells him that he knew by giving him that name he would make him strong. He knew he would have to get tough to endure the names repercussions. That was the gift he had really left his son. That was a tough lesson.
In the song the boy understands what his father had tried to do and they renew their relationship. However, the boy named Sue suggests that if you are going to have a son, name him Bill, George anything but Sue. Obviously in this case the name made a huge impact on the boy’s life. That could go either way. You would not want to name a girl Peter, Roger, Thomas or William. There is significance in everything associated with life. When you prepare to name your child give it some real thought. One day you and your child will be glad that you did.

Mary, After My Mother
By Will Curl
Copyrights © 2008 - 2009 PoemVidz.com
As I have often said I come from a large family. I grew up with 4 brothers and 3 sisters. I was the middle child and yet I would be the first sibling to give my parents a grand child. My daughter was born on my birthday. The best birthday present a guy could ever ask for. Some parents take a long time in deciding a child’s name. This was not the case for me with my little baby girl. I knew for years what I wanted to name my first-born girl. I would name her after a woman that I had endless respect and love for. I named her Mary after my Mother. This was very important to me. My Mother was very important to me as well.
My Mother had suffered many years in order to assist my Father in providing us a happy home. We were not rich and yet were spared no comforts that would affect a young child. Our house was full of love and support and this was a testimonial to my parents, especially my Mother. My Mother was never able to wear fancy dresses or enjoy all the modern innovations that other Mothers could. She had no need for a jewelry box. Her closet was full of clothes from many years of wear and tear. Our Mother was one of those parents who truly sacrificed so that we could have the things we needed to grow. Her sacrifice did not go unnoticed.
She was always there to treat every scrape, every cut and bruise. Her words of comfort and wisdom can still be heard on the wind over the farmlands of Ohio where we grew up. Our Mother did not strive to be our friend but she was always the guardian of our faith and our hearts. She became the foundation of all we knew to be right with the world. Our Mother was not a saint. She was not perfect. But she was devoted to the causes of her children. She took that responsibility to heart. She had long ago given up any dreams of castles and knights in shining armor. Her home was her castle now. Her children were the key holders to her kingdom.
I watched the years of giving take their toll on my Mother. Although she is gone now her memory is like a beacon in the night sky. She still guides us and leads us by the faith that she held so dear. I could think of no better compliment to my Mother then naming the first grand child after her. I cannot say my daughters name without thinking about my Mother. My daughter Mary is proud of her name. She attempts to do it justice. Our names are important. They define us in many ways. In the end our names are what we make of them just as it is with the journey of life. The name is only as strong as the person who carry’s it.
