The special occasions in life are unlimited. Of course what one person might consider a special occasion another may see it as just another moment in time. For the most part however most can agree on the special occasions that define our lives. It is true that special occasions can cover a lot of territory. A special occasion can be a birthday, a graduation, a wedding or an anniversary. Special occasions in life need to be celebrated and cherished. These occasions deserve all the focus and attention that we can give them. Life is to short to let them go by without showing our appreciation for them. It means too much to the people who share them. Many special occasions in life only come one time.

Weddings are a special occasion. We sincerely hope that the same people will not get married once a year. You go into a wedding hoping that it will be the start of a lifetime of love and marriage. Therefore these occasions deserve all the hype and celebration that can be provided. You want it to be a moment that will always be remembered. Where you have the wedding and who attends the ceremony are things that will always be with you. The dress the bride wore and the moments that were shared. Special occasions give birth to special emotions. Speaking of giving birth the birth of a child is another special occasion.

The moment that our children enter the world is a special occasion. It is a call for celebration. Anniversaries are another special occasion that call for great celebration especially in a world where marriages fall apart on a daily basis. It is hard to express the value of a marriage that has survived 25 years. The Silver Anniversary seems like a lifetime. In addition, those marriages that survive 50 years are truly golden. The Golden Anniversary is a special occasion above and beyond. It is a moment when you can truly say that a marriage has lasted a lifetime. Graduations are still another unforgettable special occasion. Showing appreciation for hard work and dedication on a very special day.

Our minds our flooded with emotions that derive from special occasions and we look for outlets to release those feelings. Many of us like to share those emotions with others that we love. We find great warmth in showing our appreciation for those that we care about. We want to allow our feelings of love to prevail above all else. There are quite a few ways to express those feelings of love and appreciation. One of the most popular is through poetry. Poetry has always been a reliable avenue for one to open up their hearts. Birth Of Our Grand Children Bookmark and Share Bookmark and Share

There are so many special occasions to enjoy along the journey of life. There are weddings and graduations. There are births and anniversaries. These moments are frozen in time and are the only way we have of revisiting those special occasions. One of the most satisfying special occasions for us was the birth of our children. In addition, that emotion was taken what step further with the birth of our grandchildren. The feeling that comes from holding a grandchild is so special and unique that it is very hard to describe it with the justice that it deserves. To know that the child you helped bring into the world was delivering their child to the world as well was truly rewarding.

Our first grand daughter Alexis was given birth in the month of June. She was immediately given a place in our heart forever. Alexis was a beautiful baby and we loved her right from the start. I believe we cried more that day then we did when our own children were born. It was certainly a monumental special occasion for us. Although we were not in a rush to be grandparents in our 40’s we could not avoid being overcome with joy when the moment arrived. Alexis would spend much of the first few years of her life very close to us. A magical bond was formed between a grand child and her grandparents. This bond has only strengthened over time.

Our second grand daughter Skylah was born in the month of August. She just missed my Fathers birthday by a day. Sky as we call her was born a little beauty as well. At the time of Skylah’s birth my Mother was terminally ill. My daughter Mary who was named after my Mother took the girls to see her everyday. My Mother saw Skylah as a precious little creature that brought joy to all in her presence. Perhaps my Mother saw in Skylah the changing of the guard. She may have seen Skylah as the new candle being lit as her flame was beginning to falter. I only know that my Mother found many happy moments with her great grand daughter Skylah in the remaining days of her life.

Our grand children have brought us great joy. Our daughter does not live near us now and we miss our girls profoundly. We cherish the time that we do spend with them and do our best to form memories and bonds that will warm us for years to come. Perhaps one day our son’s will deliver on to us grand children as well. For now we find comfort in our daughter’s children and we find solace in their youth. As parents we made our share of mistakes. We are now confronted with being the best grandparents that we can be. We approach this opportunity with confidence and excitement. Somehow our grand children have found a way to keep us forever young.

When you take the time to reflect back upon special occasions in your life it is hard not to include the moments when your children entered the world. The years have passed so quickly and I have celebrated many special occasions over time but none can hold a candle to the birth of our children. To assist in the process of creating another human being is overwhelming. To watch that child enter the world for the first time is priceless. I have been blessed enough to have witnessed this process 4 times in my life. Each occasion was enhanced by the circumstances surrounding the moment. All were memorable and completely unforgettable.

Our daughter Mary was born first. I was in the Army at the time and Mary was born on an Army base in a foreign country. My wife had a few complications that had required her to be placed in the hospital early. I remember well walking my wife up and down the hospital hallway attempting to bring on her labor. When the contractions finally began I was at my wife’s side and through her pain she cursed me for her situation. Within moments I stared in disbelief as my daughter Mary entered the world. I cannot express the way I felt that morning. Mary was born on my birthday only adding to the special occasion.

Our second child, our son Chris was born almost 2 years later. Chris was a big baby and my wife had a hard time delivering him. He was born in a University Hospital in Utah. He was born on Halloween, the night of the ghouls in the United States. Chris was allergic to milk when he was born but eventually grew out of it. Today he drinks more than his share of milk. Once again the miracle of birth was refreshing. Less than 3 years later our third child, our son Matthew was born. Matt was born in a hospital in Concord, North Carolina. Matt arrived into the world very quickly. It was all I could do to put on my hospital garb and be present for his birth. Matt would prove to be the easiest delivery and the easiest baby to take care of.

About 4 years after Matt we had our final child, a son we call Sean. Sean’s birth had grave significance. We knew he would be our last child. We understood that this would be the last time we would share this emotion. Sean’s delivery went easy as well. I watched him enter the world just like I watched the 3 siblings that preceded him. I found great pleasure from each and every birth occasion. It has been 17 years since Sean’s birth. Our little babies are now adults with focus on their own agenda’s. I look back at these 4 special occasions with pride and joy. Our children are part of us and we part of them. That bond is strengthened by the special occasions of their birth.

The Day We Said I Do Bookmark and Share Bookmark and Share

Our lives are full of special occasions that have been fortified in our hearts and souls forever. The older you become the more special occasions you have been blessed to be a part of. As I set back in this old chair and allow my mind to journey back over a lengthy life of ups and downs one memory always rises to the surface. The day we said I do. As I reminisce it is hard to believe that it was over 26 years ago. You can break that down to one daughter, three sons, and 2 grand daughters ago. It really does seem like it was yesterday. We were so young and full of life and each other back then. Our journey was just beginning. The stories were yet to unfold. Our passion over ruled our minds.

I will never forget our Wedding Day. That day we said I do to a lifetime together, for better or for worse. The day you accepted my faults not knowing of course how many there actually was. The day I looked into your eyes and saw a twinkle that I had never seen before. It was a September wedding. It was held in a huge park around a glittering pool. I remember the reception when we walked out together. All of our friends and family clapped and stood and for one gleaming moment in our lives we felt like movie stars as the cameras went off one after the other. I will never forget your smile that day. It was as big as I had ever seen it. Your happiness engulfed me. You made me whole.

I remember our first dance together. Although I was never much of a dancer it was a special moment to remember. As we looked into each other’s eyes we were saying I do all over again. As I pulled you close to me the moment became larger than life as I began to dream of our life together. I could only wonder what you were thinking at that same moment. My mind drifted back to earlier when we had signed the marriage book. That day we had cemented our pledge of death till us part. I have signed my name many times since that day so long ago. Not one has served me as well as the contract I signed that day.

Saying I do was a big step for the both of us. It has led us on a journey of love that has been tested time and time again. Our marriage has endured where many have fell to the wayside. The strength of our bond has been the glue that holds any family together. The strength to understand, compromise, listen, and to show love and support has served us well. Perhaps the most powerful sign of strength was the ability to forgive our shortcomings. No my dear, I will not forget that special day. That day of all days when we said I do to us.

The Holidays Bookmark and Share Bookmark and Share

I am and will always be a family man. I love the Holidays when families come together in celebration. For me the Holidays have always begun with Halloween in October and finished with New Years Day in January. In between you enjoyed the best Holidays of all Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Holidays are most definitely my favorite time of year. My favorite Holiday is Christmas. I love that time of the year. It is a special time when people tend to be a little friendlier and goodwill towards men seems to be a possibility. All of the Holidays are special occasions. So many Holidays over the years have left me with warm memories.

I remember the Halloweens when I was growing up. That night when you could dress up like a ghost or goblin and visit houses in your neighborhood and receive candy and goodies that would last for weeks. There were parties filled with dunking for apples and costume contests. Halloween was a lot of fun and it allowed our imagination to soar. For one night of the year we could be whatever we wanted to be. We could be our favorite storybook hero or a monster from the silver screen. The memories are priceless and the years have not erased their glory.

Thanksgiving was always a special time in our home. The smells that would consume a house on Thanksgiving Day were like no other. There was always so much food being prepared. The highlight of the feast was always a big turkey roasted to perfection. This table centerpiece was looked forward to for months preceding the holiday. Thanksgiving falls in the autumn season, which is my favorite season of all. The leaves are changing to colors that only eyes can truly appreciate. It is also right in the heart of football season. My memories are filled with Thanksgivings and football. Every year we would get together as a family and play football. The tradition still exists to this very day.

The Christmas Holiday brings out the best in me. I love the music that has evolved around Christmas. I love the snow and the lights that decorate street after street. There is no better sight for me than a decorated Christmas tree standing proudly in the corner of your living room. The fireplace burning brightly and the smell of chestnuts as they roast upon the fire. For some the Christmas Holiday is about presents being exchanged. For me it is about love. It is about the human spirit being able to stand above itself and present hope for all mankind. I love the Holidays and I look forward to them each and every year. They are certainly special occasions.
